Robot sumo is designed around the thrilling Japanese competitive sport of sumo wrestling. The goal is to design a robot that most effectively pushes the opponent robot out of the ring in a series of timed games. Student engineers are guided through the design process that includes basic and more complex customized modifications. Students with more experience learn to use more advanced design features, and concepts such as "rapid prototyping" and "proof of concept." Each sumo robot carries a light sensor. Programming code includes the use of loops and switches triggered by refleted light values, movement, and sound. This is a great opportunity to code intelligence into an automated competitor!
